In my coaching sessions with CEOs and their Chiefs of Staff, I've noticed some standout practices that really make a difference in their success. Here's the gist of what works: 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆: • 𝟭:𝟭𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗸𝗲𝘆. Make space for candid talks on what's up ahead, challenges, and the big picture. • 𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗴𝗲 with your vision and goals. Alignment here is crucial. • 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁? Set your go-to modes of communication, whether it's email, face-to-face, or text. My clients love voice memos! 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗮 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁: • 𝗕𝗲 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻. Create a space where everyone feels safe to speak their mind. • 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝘀. Recognize and lean into each other's expertise. • 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁. Building a personal bond and mutual respect goes a long way. 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆: • 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁. CEOs let your CoS to take the reins on projects. • 𝗧𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿. Brainstorm together and look at problems from all angles. • 𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 to keep things flowing smoothly. 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼 𝘁𝗶𝗽𝘀: • 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁𝘀. Agendas sent in advance mean everyone's prepped. Makes for the most productive meetings. • 𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀 post-meeting to stay on target. • 𝗙𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗽𝘀. Regularly exchange feedback to keep improving. A recent experience with a client vividly reminded me of a powerful insight: when we become fixated on the past, we inadvertently limit our vision for the future. Dwelling on past mistakes not only consumes valuable time and energy but also blinds us to the countless opportunities that lie ahead. I, too, am no stranger to this. Dwelling on what went wrong is a costly investment, robbing us of personal growth and potential. However, there's immense power in turning the page. When we do, we unlock a world of possibilities. We empower ourselves to innovate, adapt, and thrive. Here are three prompts I share with clients that help facilitate the shift: • What worked well? • What didn’t work well? • What would I do differently next time? These prompts allow you to extract valuable lessons from your experience without being anchored by them. One of my clients realized that, by focusing on what could be improved rather than what went wrong, she could approach similar situations with greater confidence and effectiveness in the future. Reflecting on coaching sessions last week with my clients, I noticed an interesting theme: the stark contrast between decisions made from a place of fear and those inspired by possibility. This distinction is transformative and can redefine our paths, especially in leadership. We looked closely at the mechanics of fear-based decisions—how they can limit vision, stifle innovation, and keep us tethered to staying safe and known. On the other hand, possibility-based decisions encourage us to envision a future unbounded by current constraints, to innovate, and to lead with courage. The journey of leadership is ripe with opportunities to choose between fear and possibility. Each decision point is a chance to shape our careers, our teams, and even the industries we operate in. Navigating the Leader/Chief-of-Staff dynamic is like managing a professional marriage.
